Bill Chapman obtained a directed verdict for a supermarket after the plaintiff rested her case. The case was tried before Judge Swan and a jury of six in the Newburyport District Court. The plaintiff allegedly slipped and fell in a large puddle of water in one of the aisles of the store. Judge Swan agreed with Bill's argument that the plaintiff had not met the prima facie elements of her case either under a traditional premises liability theory or a mode of operation.
