Melick & Porter attorneys Matthew Welnicki and Michael Mazurczak represented USA Hockey and its officials in a lawsuit brought by a former hockey coach against USA Hockey (the national governing body of the sport), its officials, a regional league, and other teams and individuals in Worcester Superior Court. The former coach alleged that the defendants breached their contracts with him after they permitted players from his team to finish a season as a new team. The former coach also acknowledged that this happened after he was arrested in Florida. Matt and Maz filed a motion to dismiss, arguing that that the former coach had not identified any specific contract provision that gave him the right to pursue his claims or obtain the monetary relief he was seeking. The Court granted the motion to dismiss and reiterated the well-established standard that it “need not regard as true legal conclusions cast in the form of factual allegations.”
